These kinds of films fulfil their own fantasy narrative: that of being seen as you think you deserve to be seen. Clothes here don't just bestow status or beauty, although that's certainly a crucial part of their function, but the right kind of visibility. They elevate their wearers, rendering them deserving of affection and admiring attention. Just like Cinderella, these women acquire power in their moment of visual metamorphosis because they ascend the social hierarchy. On the Riverside’s shallow stage, Nik Corrall’s set does a clever job of conjuring the various venues where Mrs Harris cleans, but even with the help of some imaginative lighting from Adam King, it can’t quite suggest the opening up of Ada’s mind that her trip to Paris involves. That’s Mrs Ada Harris, a widowed London cleaning lady. A practical woman and a reliable worker, she left her good friend Mrs Violet Butterfield to look after her clients while she was away. Russell is great as Mrs Harris, effortlessly combating the ‘saintly working-class’ stereotype with flashes of frustration and the smallest, sharpest moments of heartbreaking grief. It’s also a lot of fun to watch her and Anne Wensak as neighbour Violet basically hustle her clients to raise the money for her flight to France.

There’s good support from Kelly Price as a name-dropping socialite and stressed Dior manager, Charlotte Kennedy as a bratty actress and an adrift model, and Nathanael Campbell as her two flustered beaus.

Flowers for Mrs Harris is based on the novel by Paul Gallico, and directed by Bronagh Lagan. The book is by Rachel Wagstaff, with music and lyrics from Richard Taylor orchestrations by Jason Car. The musical director is Jonathan Gill. Casting is by Jane Deitch. The small, slender woman with apple-red cheeks, greying hair, and shrewd, almost naughty little eyes sat with her face pressed against the cabin window of the BEA Viscount on the morning flight from London to Paris. As, with a rush and a roar, it lifted itself from the runway, her spirits soared aloft with it. She was nervous, but not at all frightened, for she was convinced that nothing could happen to her now. Hers was the bliss of one who knew that at last she was off upon the adventure at the end of which lay her heart’s desire.”

There’s a big cast of supporting characters, and Richard Taylor’s conversational, almost sung-through score sets all of their interactions to music. It patiently and delicately builds to a wonderful tear-jerking climax, but there are definitely times when you wish a lengthy segment could be reduced to a few lines of dialogue. Taylor’s music is always lovely, but not especially impactful. The 2018 Chichester Festival production was directed by Daniel Evans, with a cast led by Clare Burt (who won a UK Theatre Award for her performance), Joanna Riding and Gary Wilmot, alongside Claire Machin, Louis Maskell, Mark Meadows, Laura Pitt-Pulford, Nicola Sloane, Luke Latchman and Rhona McGregor. Outside the windows of her basement flat were two window boxes of geraniums, her favourite flower, and inside, wherever there was room, stood a little pot containing a geranium, struggling desperately to conquer its environment, or a single hyacinth or a tulip, bought from a barrow for a hard-earned shilling.”

In Parliament, Mrs Harris finds that being nice, kind and hopeful does not always lead to people being nice and kind in return. There is rather less comedy in this third book. Flowers for Mrs Harris have announced the remaining cast that will star alongside Jenna Russell from 30 September to 26 November at the Riverside Studios. This is a very traditional musical and it’s easy to see how it could have been turned in to a film in the 1960s without any changes. It tells a cute enough story, has a great central performance and some fine support, but the staging is uninspired and the plot’s predictable. None of this would have been an issue with catchier songs that contained smarter lyrics concerning Mrs Harris’s plight and the working class world, but too many are frothy and light and almost instantly forgettable. The storytelling is lovely. I read about Mrs Harris’s adventure in the same way that I read the books I loved as a child. I was completely captivated, living every moment, reacting to everything, wishing and hoping… I was very sorry to part company with Mrs Harris, but we will be meeting again. She appears in three more novels.

Based on a 1958 novella by Paul Gallico, an author who knew exactly how to tug the heart strings, it is gentle, warm and full of the joys of kindness and generosity. It understands the value of dreams, of how longing for something beautiful – a work of art – can inspire and sustain. It is in its own quiet way a masterpiece. They don't write books like this any more. No, they really don't, and that's a pity. Mrs. Ada Harris is a London charwoman who has saved her pennies for years to fulfill her one secret desire - to own a Dior designer gown. The story opens with our aging, sweet heroine on her first airplane flight - to Paris. As Mrs. 'Arris (as she says it) moves about Paris she charms almost everyone with her kindness and naivete. In this book there isn't any violence, sex, profanity, or other elements so many writers seem to think they need to tell a story. However you will find plenty of plot, a secret romance Mrs. Harris helps out, and interesting characters. Unfortunately this book can be hard to find, so I was delighted to discover it can be read for free online through openlibrary.com. Read it and enter a kinder world. :) Mrs. 'Arris Goes to Paris is a novel written by Paul Gallico and published in 1958. In the United Kingdom, it was published as Flowers for Mrs Harris. It was the first in a series of four books about the adventures of a London charwoman. Daniel Evans’s final production as artistic director of the Crucible is a perfect fillip for a new age of austerity and features some fine comedy as Clare Burt’s indomitable femme de m é nage melts the froideur of the staff on the Avenue Montaigne. It also looks absolutely ravishing as designer Lez Brotherston takes full advantage of the licence to indulge in the scandalous extravagance of the New Look. Evans’s tenure in Sheffield has been a rare luxury. It’s only fitting that his parting gift should bear such a prestigious label.Mrs. ‘Arris Goes to Paris (1992) a TV movie stars Angela Lansbury, Diana Rigg, and Omar Sharif. The film was produced by Lansbury's production company Corymore Productions, and directed by Lansbury's son, Anthony Shaw. It's unsurprising that Gallico frames Mrs Harris's need for this gown in magical terms. She is enthralled and enchanted by Dior's designs, striving to possess one for herself because of its talismanic power – those layers of tulle and chiffon reminding this mature woman of her own youth, vitality and beauty. Her dress is also literally transformational. Although it might not change her appearance (Gallico is either cruel or honest enough to appraise the vision of her in her chosen gown as one "that worked no miracles except in her soul"), she still achieves her moment of "dreamed-of and longed-for bliss" in Paris – and leaves as a much-altered and enriched woman. This recording is as stunning as the show it represents … the warmth and sincerity that the score gives was very much needed … the score is very transient from song to speech - and it works absolutely beautifully [on record] … the performances from Burt, Riding, Pitt-Pulford and Meadows are the things that awards are made of. Indeed, the whole company is just perfect - harmonies lift many of the numbers, and sound terrific on this well-produced recording … but the kudos for all of this must go to Richard Taylor, who was also responsible for the outstanding orchestration. It’s thanks to him that this cast recording has been made, and thankful we should be."

In Moscow, Mrs Harris wins a trip there and stumbles onto the Soviet Union's most embarrassing problem: it has bought a cargo of toilet paper that has had to be marked as birdseed. This is the first London production of Flowers for Mrs. Harris sinces its Sheffield premiere in 2016. Though his name was well-known in the United States, he was an unknown in the rest of the world. In 1941, the Snow Goose changed all that, and he became, if not a best-selling author by today's standards, a writer who was always in demand. Apart from a short spell as a war correspondent between 1943 and 1946, he was a full-time freelance writer for the rest of his life. He has lived all over the place, including England, Mexico, Lichtenstein and Monaco, and he lived in Antibes for the last years of his life. That makes the personal connections, the small acts of kindness and the wistful dreams feel all the more special. The message that rings out (and which our current government desperately needs to hear) is that everyone is deserving of happiness and of beauty, or art, no matter their circumstances. In New York, the French Count re-appears and, again, all but one or two characters reveal hidden hearts. As Ada, Jenna Russell’s richly expressive voice and quality of contained goodness are as colourful as the iridescent organza that she sees in a client’s wardrobe. She lights up the heart of the show, a beacon of hope. But around her, Bronagh Lagan’s production has lost some of the fizz needed to propel this simple story forward. It sometimes seems a bit too slow and drab to unleash its potential. In contrast to this, "The Dress Showing" in Act Two features a selection of modelled Dior style dresses. The expectations are high at this point in the show, due to the anticipation created by the characters themselves and party because we didn’t ever see the dress earlier in the beautiful first sighting moment. The dresses here should be impressive and showstopping, and although they are beautiful, some ill-fitting wardrobe moments take the magic away a little. The costumes by Sara Perks throughout the production are well considered and become an important part of each character’s personality.
