The story picks up a little when Nynaeve meets up with Moghedian again, forcing Birgitte into major character status in a rather surprising way. As Rand establishes his control of Cairhien, a nation torn apart by scheming and war, he learns that the Forsaken Rahvin has deposed Queen Morgase who is presumed dead. The forsaken become a bit more known to us as well, after rand captures asmodeon at the end of book 4 he is there throughout book 5 as his guide to all things forsaken.Eventually Moghedien traps Nynaeve and Birigitte in the world of dreams, and the pair narrowly escapes, however at the cost of Birigitte being pushed into the waking world severely injured. I think she is slowly beginning to learn to direct her anger and to reason out why certain things make her so upset.

Egwene is surprised to learn that Aviendha volunteered to be beaten in punishment for lying to Rand. Meanwhile, Nynaeve al'Meara and Elayne Trakand travel through lands filled with Seanchan left behind from the battle at Toman Head, Dragonsworn, bandits, and Whitecloaks, attempting to find the base of the rebel Aes Sedai. During the ensuing battle, Rahvin kills Mat, Asmodean, and Aviendha, but Rand hunts down Rahvin in Tel'aran'rhiod and destroys him with balefire, thereby reversing the deaths of Mat, Asmodean, and Aviendha. Siuan demands that Nynaeve teach her how to use the dream ter’angreal, since it doesn’t require channeling. Tarabon and Arad Domon are shattered with internal conflict, and even the White Tower, bulwark of the Light for three thousand years, has been torn in two by Rand’s appearance in the world.Aviendha gives him a belt buckle in the shape of a dragon, which she claims is to cancel her debt to him. There are some genuinely good cliffhangers at the end of chapters; maybe a character has bumped into an adversary, maybe they're preparing for a big battle.

To get past Jordan's fluff and irritating character rants, I regularly had to skim over several paragraphs, which is a very draining feeling for me.It is the first novel in the series to not involve an appearance by each of the three ta'veren from the Two Rivers, due to Perrin's absence. Galad offers to find Nynaeve and Elayne a ship as well, and Uno offers to leave Ghealdan with them when they go.

Despite the chaos swirling around him, Rand continues to learn how to harness his abilities, determined to wield the One Power--and ignoring the counsel of Moiraine Damodred at great cost. All the while Logain withdraws into himself, slowly losing the will to live as the loss of the Power takes over. They are polar opposites and each regards the opposite sex as a Martian, no matter what culture or country the character is from. In Tanchico, Nynaeve and Elayne set out for the White Tower—only to receive news that it has suffered a schism.If two women link, they do not double their strength - linking is not as simple as adding together the power of each - but if they are strong enough, they can match a man. Lightning bolts triggered by Rahvin kill Mat, Asmodean and Aviendha, which causes Rand to recklessly attack the Forsaken.
