About this deal

The TV also has the anti-burn that detects logos/static content onscreen to reduce the brightness of those static elements. There’s also DTS Play-Fi too, offering multi-room and High-Res music compatibility, and the set’s audio is provided by a Bowers & Wilkins 3.1.2 Atmos sound system. So with Ambilight out of the way, the 55OLED807 becomes a slightly more straightforward, like-for-like rival to all the price-comparable alternatives around. Mind you, its compatibility with every worthwhile HDR standard, including Dolby Vision and HDR10+, marks it out as the product of a company who puts the consumer, rather than industry politics, first. Should you find it’s missing anything else that you need, you can always use the platform’s Chromecast function to send streams from your phone, tablet or computer straight to your OLED TV.

But make the right adjustments and the endpoint is a lovely picture. Sharpness and detail remain two of the set's greatest strengths, but its colour balance is also delightfully well-judged. We suspect that the tone is just a little richer than is truly neutral, but the resulting picture is so pleasant that we could hardly call that a flaw. Content is arranged in customisable carousels, with your list of apps along the top and then “channels” for each app underneath it, such as Netflix or Prime Video. In these carousels you’ll find suggested content for you to dive into straight from the home screen. I’m not convinced the recommendations are as personalised to your viewing habits as you’ll find on something like Samsung’s interface, but that’s really our only niggle. Of course, the picture is only as good as the processor managing the image and the new P5 AI picture perfect engine did a great job during my viewing time. It controls image sharpness, motion handling and colour realism and unscaled ITV1 from standard definition to 4K in amazing quality. Lesser 4K panels suffer from poor quality upscaling but this wasn’t a problem here, programming was sharp and smooth as you would expect from a top end television. Mini LED joins the Philips family of TVs, promising thin screens and blazing HDR brightness. However, Philips won’t be wading into the 8K with no models on the horizon. In previous years, Philips has employed rather heavy-handed detail enhancers to create an impressive but slightly artificial feel of sharpness. This time we find we don’t need them at all. Watching Deadpool in Advancements over the 2020 OLED+935 include HDMI 2.1 capability that makes this OLED better suited for gaming, while the OS is Android TV 10 (no confirmation as to whether Google TV is coming yet). Philips is renowned for its video processing and the new 3rd Generation P5 chip is onboard the 854. Upscaling is good with 576i SD broadcast looking as good as you can expect for such a low resolution on a 4K panel. HD Blu-ray and streaming looks nice and sharp with good line definition and no obvious signs of edge ringing within the content. We didn’t notice any artefacts with upscaled images in the accurate modes, even with test patterns. Obviously, with the P5 chip, you have lots of image manipulation options including extra sharpening and edge enhancement settings if you really want to go to town with these settings, but when set to off we didn’t see anything being applied that shouldn’t be there.

Lower resolution content isn’t dismissed by the OLED806 either. 1080p footage looks almost as good as native 4K content, with only a slight coarsening of fine detail to give the game away – and a little less positivity where edge definition is concerned. Even bog-standard TV broadcasts remain watchable, though they’re a bit soft and noisy by comparison. Philips’ latency of their premium TVs has always lagged behind their competitors, but that should change in 2021. In other respects, it’s clear why this is at the bottom. There’s no Android TV, replaced by the Saphi interface. That means no built-in Chromecast, Google Assistant, or the Google Play Store, but the set will support major SVOD apps in Netflix and Disney+. There’s no Ambilight, and the number of HDMI inputs drops to three. This year, Philips has also thrown HDR10+ Adaptive into the mix. It uses the TV’s light sensor to automatically choose the best brightness settings while watching HDR10+ material, according to your ambient light conditions. Oddly, the equivalent tech on the Dolby Vision side, Dolby Vision IQ, is not included, but the set will still adapt Dolby Vision content to ambient lighting conditions using Philips's own tech.Continuing the theme of wide support and usability features is the Android TV smart system and general design of the 856. Android brings with it one of the best smart platforms around now and the inclusion of Freeview Play means the presence of all the broadcast channels catchup services. As with all of the OLED+ sets, the 937 comes with a Bowers & Wilkins sound system attached to the bottom of the set, and also utilises LG's brighter OLED EX panel that we really liked in the OLED+ 907. The Philips OLED+936 has the identical OLED panel and processor set-up as the 986 above. It's the form factor and speaker system that differ. If you’re looking for the big reason to buy the Philips 48-inch OLED TV over the other two major players, then this is it: its picture performance is simply the best. Sharper and more sophisticated in its use of light, it just feels a step above. Sizes:43-inch (43PUS8506), 50-inch (50PUS8506), 58-inch (58PUS8506), 65-inch (65PUS8506), 70-inch (70PUS8506), 75-inch (75PUS8506)The 43- to 65-inch models get a T-bar stand for support, with the sizes up to 58-inches getting swivel action. The biggest models in the range switch to feet at either side that can adjusted to narrow or wide configurations. Hi all, had the 55OLED856 one week now after it's first decent price drop at Richer Sounds and have spent more time trying to get it set up to a reasonable level than I have any other recent bit of tech I can remember. If anyone could assist with one or more of the following issues, I'd be really grateful. All the announced (and unannounced) 2021 OLED models feature the ‘6’ suffix, so the OLED705 lead us to imagine it has more in common with the 2020 TVs. Bloat is an issue for many OLED TVs. As surely as night follows day, many mainstream sets swell in the area where they keen their electronic hardware – and the OLED806 is no different. To be fair to the Philips, it features a bigger area of OLED super-skinniness than quite a few rivals. But where it isn’t slim, it’s very nearly 7cm deep, which could be problematic if you’re keen to hang it off your wall.
