About this deal
Turn the heat off, cover your dye pot, and leave it undisturbed overnight, for 12 to 24 hours. At this stage, it will be a moderate to dark brown. If it seems light, you can repeat the process with more walnut hulls. Turn off heat and allow the dye bath to return to room temperature, stirring occasionally. Rinse when cool enough to handle. Wear gloves as residual dye can stain skin.

Set your machine to its hottest, longest wash. If there’s an eco setting available, you can use this as it will cycle the same water through the machine instead of draining and using fresh water, which will prolong the time your fabric is in the dye. Mordant for plant fibers, a note: Generally, plant fibers are mordanted with a tannin followed by the dyestuff, but our walnut husks are already extremely tannin-rich, so we’re essentially mordanting and dyeing all at once! Do two separate dyebaths, one with salt and one with vinegar. This will probably be best for darkest colours. https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5ac4eb022971149bb6d709d3/t/5b3e425b8a922db5a5649024/1530806875497/iDye+Fixative+Instructions.pdf Acid Dye, Alum, deColourant, Dorland’s Wax, Dye-Na-Flow, ExtravOrganza, Inkjet Fabric Sheets, Lumiere, Procion MX, Removable Water-based Resist, Soda Ash

Fill a stainless steel or enamel pot with just enough warm water for the fabric to move freely. Turn heat on medium. Remove fabric from water.Natural dyeing is a fun option to explore, but it takes longer and requires specialist equipment and mordanting chemicals. Supplies Rit recommends using twice the usual recommended amount of dye for the weight of your fabric, and doubling the recommended time it spends in the dye bath, as well as using the post-dye Color-Stay Dye Fixative.
